Studies in Indology, Philosophy and Islam at the Universities of Bonn, Cologne, Vienna and Münster. 1973-2005 Professor of Indology and Buddhist Studies in the Department of Indian and Tibetan Studies at the Asia-Africa Institute of the University of Hamburg. His work is devoted to the research of Buddhism in India, Buddhist ethics, and the Yogaacaara School.
