The Numata Center heartly welcomes Prof. Dr. Barend ter Haar, professor for Chinese Language and Literature, responsible for the Sinology track of the Buddhist Studies masters program.
In his research, professor ter Haar focuses on the social history of religions and culture as well as on issues of ethnical identity, violence, fear, and social organization in China. He furthermore devotes himself to the research of the role of oral and written forms of communication with respect to historic change, social and gender differences, interpretation and performance to make visible the relevance of traditional culture and cultural patterns for today.
In his in inaugural lecture at the Asien-Afrika-Institut, Barend ter Haar discussed the discrepancy between society-demanded Confucian harmony and the violent reality alongside the discrepancy between literature and orality up to the late 10th century in China.
