With his new research project, Dr. Carsten Krause has acquired a so-called “Eigene Stelle” (“own position”) at the Numata Center for Buddhist Studies, funded by the DFG. In doing so, he contributes to expanding the focus on China in Hamburg's Buddhist studies.
The three-year research project by Dr. Krause focuses on the development of Buddhism in contemporary China, but sometimes requires an in-depth historical analysis, the title is: “Buddhist Positioning in the People’s Republic of China (1978-2023): Historical Discourse Analysis of the Introduction and Interpretation of the Concept of ‘Humanistic Buddhism’ (renjian fojiao 人间佛教) by the Buddhist Association of China (Zhongguo fojiao xiehui 中国佛教协会)” (see Projects).
Travel to Asia and an international symposium are also planned to support his extensive, mainly text-based research. In addition, Dr. Krause is looking forward to further intensifying the professional exchange in the local and international network of the Numata Center for Buddhist Studies. Since 2017, Dr. Krause is affiliated as a Research Fellow with the Numata Center for Buddhist Studies. Having completed his doctorate in 2001 on Buddhism in medieval China, Dr. Krause was continuously expanding his field of research to contemporary Buddhism (see People).
We look forward to intensifying our collaboration with Dr. Krause and wish him every success in further research.
